The hadiths I mention below are through memory, after listening to khutbahs (sermons) and/or reading Islamic article. Although I tried to search of its source via the internet, I fail to find the exact hadiths that I have read and heard.. so if any of you Islamic scholars are well versed in hadiths, do email me on regards to where this hadiths came from ie.. Bukhari, Muslim etc.

Good Manners / Deeds

05 OCT 07

The previous Islamic articles I wrote were about the importance of Prayers and Ramadan (fasting). I do not want to leave it as it is and not talk about the importance of doing good deeds and manners in Islam. Because some of you young readers might imply that Islam is ONLY about rituals and that is so far from the truth. Just when you thought prayers is the be all end all in Islam and that is the ONLY thing that can bring you to Jannah (heaven), I have read up on some hadiths that tells us otherwise.

A popular hadith:
"A prostitute was forgiven by God, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, God forgave her because of that.

God forgives and rewards whom HE WISHES!
Another hadith to explain rituals vs good deeds/manners
" The Prophet (pbuh) was once informed of a woman who used to offer prayers regularly and keep fasts very often but her neighbors were sick of her abusive tongue. The Prophet (pbuh) said that the woman would be in Hell fire. The Prophet (pbuh) was also told of another woman who does not have these virtues but does no harm on her neighbors. The Prophet said she will go to Paradise."

A prayer peforming Muslim but hated by people...
trust me, they do exist.
Another one that I have heard and it still sticks in my mind:
“A man was saving up all his money so that he can go to Hajj and it took a lot of years to get the money. Then one day he can smell the fragrance of delicious roasting meat being cooked and it came from his neighbor’s home. So he went to visit his neighbor to ask what she was cooking that smelled so nice. She said that her family was going through a difficult time and they have not eaten for days. They saw a dead animal nearby and she took it and cook it so that her family can eat. On hearing that, the man gave his Hajj savings to the woman and God accepted his Hajj even though he did not even went to Mecca.”

And lastly, do you know someone in school or a co-worker who is obnoxious, rude, unreasonable, impatient, you name it.. so much so that people tries their best to avoid him/her? So what does Islam said about these people?
The Prophet (pbuh) “The worst among you, who people avoid them, fearing their evil manners."

So let me see, according to these hadiths, God rewarded a prostitute, a woman whose prayers was haphazard and a guy who did not go to Hajj. This just tells us how merciful God is and how He forgives and rewards whom He wishes. And if you read my previous articles, it also shows how Prayers and good deeds go hand in hand – one cannot do without the other. What good is your prayers and fasting if you are hated by the people around you? And what reward can you gain on Judgement Day when you did never even prayed and humbled yourself before God Almighty during your lifetime? In order to earn God’s mercy, you must have BOTH.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whomever his prayer does not deter him from evil manners and major sins there is no prayer for him.”
