When
Umar (ra) kept on going telling the Prophet (pbuh) about what
the evil deeds the deceased used to do, the Prophet was only
smiling. When Umar (ra) stopped, the Prophet (pbuh) told him
to move away. When Umar (ra) finally did, the Prophet started
to lead the prayers. And he even followed the funeral procession
to the grave and when he was at the grave, he continued to make
doa (supplication) to Allah to forgive the sins for the deceased,
even though he was an enemy of Islam. That is our Prophet (pbuh).
Al-Rauf, (Kind) Al-Rahim (Merciful).
Note:
God later revealed in the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad not
to do that again in the verse: “And never (O Muhammad)
pray for one of them who dies, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they
disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while
they were evil-doers.” (Quran 9:84)
The
verse explains that we cannot ask for forgiveness on behalf
of the deceased who died as DISBELIEVERS. YOU CAN (doa) supplicate
for deceased Muslims though.
The
hadith above tells us how worried the Prophet (pbuh) is for
anybody Muslim or Non-Muslim that they will be thrown into hellfire.
Even though the deceased caused so much difficulty for the Muslims,
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) does not harbour any ill feelings and
wanted to lead the prayer and even escort the body to the grave.
In
regards to the question, "I thought God is Kind and Merciful.
Why doesn't he pardoned the deceased?"
God is Kind and Merciful than any being WITHOUT A DOUBT. But
you have forgotten that he is also JUST. If he is unjust, he
will forgive every evil doer and place all of mankind in Jannah
(heaven). If this is the case, then what is the purpose of a
Judgement Day? Why create Hell when there are no occupants?
Where is the reward of the Muslim who controls his desire of
drinking alcohol, fornication, usury etc? Do not have this idea
that you can commit sin because you justify it by saying "God
is merciful."
