Who is this man?
04 AUG 08

One of the problems that is facing the ummah (including me) today is the lack of knowledge about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). I noticed if you ask a Muslim on whether he love the Prophet (pbuh), he would reply with a resounding “Yes!” but when you ask him a couple of question about the Prophet (pbuh), most of us would stammer because of how little we know about him. So God willing, this article will shed some light about this great man and why our heart should melt whenever his name is mentioned and why he deserve our love.

So who is he, the Prophet Muhammad (saw)? God describes him in the Quran:
“Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He, for the believers is full of pity, kind, and merciful.” (Quran 9:128)

What this verse means is that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is worried and stressed for anybody Muslim or Non-Muslim to be thrown into Hellfire. And he is anxious for you to follow the right guided path. And on top of that God has attributed 2 of his 99 names (“Al-Rauf”, Kind and “Al-Rahim” Merciful) to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Another hadith states that once, the Prophet wanted to lead the jenazah prayer (prayer for the dead) for one of the top Munafiqeen (hypocrite). After all the hardship he had caused for the Muslims, the Prophet (pbuh) still wanted to lead the prayers. But just when he wanted to start the prayer, Umar (ra) stood in front of the Prophet blocking his way. Umar (ra) said:

When Umar (ra) kept on going telling the Prophet (pbuh) about what the evil deeds the deceased used to do, the Prophet was only smiling. When Umar (ra) stopped, the Prophet (pbuh) told him to move away. When Umar (ra) finally did, the Prophet started to lead the prayers. And he even followed the funeral procession to the grave and when he was at the grave, he continued to make doa (supplication) to Allah to forgive the sins for the deceased, even though he was an enemy of Islam. That is our Prophet (pbuh). Al-Rauf, (Kind) Al-Rahim (Merciful).

Note: God later revealed in the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad not to do that again in the verse: “And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dies, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while they were evil-doers.” (Quran 9:84)

The verse explains that we cannot ask for forgiveness on behalf of the deceased who died as DISBELIEVERS. YOU CAN (doa) supplicate for deceased Muslims though.

The hadith above tells us how worried the Prophet (pbuh) is for anybody Muslim or Non-Muslim that they will be thrown into hellfire. Even though the deceased caused so much difficulty for the Muslims, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) does not harbour any ill feelings and wanted to lead the prayer and even escort the body to the grave.

In regards to the question, "I thought God is Kind and Merciful. Why doesn't he pardoned the deceased?"
God is Kind and Merciful than any being WITHOUT A DOUBT. But you have forgotten that he is also JUST. If he is unjust, he will forgive every evil doer and place all of mankind in Jannah (heaven). If this is the case, then what is the purpose of a Judgement Day? Why create Hell when there are no occupants? Where is the reward of the Muslim who controls his desire of drinking alcohol, fornication, usury etc? Do not have this idea that you can commit sin because you justify it by saying "God is merciful."

Another hadith on regards about how the sahabah (companions) loved the Prophet (pbuh) was the incident with Tauban (ra). The Prophet was praying in the masjid and he noticed Tauban (ra) wasn’t present. He asked, “Where is Tauban? He is skipping prayers.” Then the rest of them told the Prophet (pbuh) that Tauban is sick. So the Prophet (pbuh) with the rest of the sahabah went to visit Tauban at his home to see how he is doing. The Prophet asked “What’s wrong Tauban?”

The Prophet smiled and said “Glory and good tidings to you Tauban. You will be stuck in the lifeafter with the one you love.”

With this hadith, we are able to understand how tight the relationship Tauban (ra) has with the Prophet (saw). He was so worried about the possibilty of being apart from the Prophet (pbuh) in the hereafter that he fell physically ill. Imagine that! Only a person with an exemplary character can affect another human being to such an extent.

Another hadith that shows how the Prophet (pbuh) lived his life was when Umar (ra) visited the Prophet at his home. He saw the Prophet was lying on an uncomfortable piece of mat made of palm leaves. When the Prophet (pbuh) sat up, Umar (ra) could see the criss cross marks of the mat etched on the back of the Prophet (pbuh). Umar (ra) then took alook around the room and there was nothing but a jug of water. Umar (ra) could not help but cry.

The Prophet (pbuh) asked Umar (ra) what’s the matter and why he was crying. Umar (ra) said;

"Oh Messenger of Allah! The leader of Persia and Rome commit grave sins by associating partners with God, yet they live such luxurious lives!"

Hearing that the Prophet (pbuh) got angry with Umar (ra). And he replied;

With this hadith, we can take alook at how the Prophet (pbuh) lived his life with such modesty. Even though he was the leader of the Muslims and he has every right to live luxuriously, he prefer not to.

So I hope with these 3 hadiths, you can have a better picture of the character of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and how he made an impact to the people around him. God willing, in the next coming weeks, I will write about the sacrifices and difficulty he went go through to bring Islam to us.

Ramadan is coming,
EB
